Mission Spotlight - Impact Stories

Access to quality dental care remains a significant challenge throughout Haiti.  The country has a tremendous need for trained dental assistants and hygienists who can provide preventive care, educate communities, and support dentists in improving oral health. Thanks to the partnership between Hinche Haiti Dental Outreach (HHDO), dedicated supporters, and Missionary Flights International (MFI), that need is beginning to be met, one student at a time.

Since August 2025, the iCare Dental Assisting and Hygiene School has been training the next generation of Haitian dental professionals. What began with a vision and aging equipment has grown into a thriving educational program that is preparing Haitians to serve their own communities. When preparations began, much of the clinic equipment had been sitting unused for years. Several dental chairs required repairs, and the compressors and vacuum systems were no longer operating at full capacity. Through dedicated restoration efforts, several dental chairs were returned to working condition, while portable dental units enabled the school to begin practical training despite equipment limitations. Water and electricity, provided through the support of the host campus and existing facilities, have created a functional learning environment where students receive both classroom instruction and valuable hands-on clinical experience.

The inaugural class includes 13 highly motivated students, 10 women and 3 men, representing communities throughout Haiti's Central Plateau. Many entered the program with previous healthcare experience, giving them a strong foundation as they receive specialized training in dental hygiene, infection control, patient care, preventive treatments, sterilization procedures, and chairside assisting. According to Dr. Wooliams, the students have embraced the curriculum with enthusiasm and dedication. "Our program is very interesting, methodical, and appreciated by the students who are truly motivated." As the program enters its final phase, students are spending more time in supervised clinical practice, applying the skills they have learned throughout the year.

One of the most encouraging aspects of the program is that students are already making a meaningful impact. Under supervision, they are providing preventive dental services, including cleanings, Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) treatments, and fluoride applications for orphans, students, staff members, and members of the local church community. These practical experiences not only prepare students for future careers but also expand access to much-needed dental care for people who might otherwise go without treatment.

The first graduating class celebrated commencement on July 26, 2026. With Haiti facing a severe shortage of trained dental professionals, these graduates are well positioned to serve in clinics, hospitals, schools, and community health programs throughout the country. The vision continues to grow. Registration is already underway for the second class, which begins training on August 13, 2026, continuing the mission of equipping healthcare workers who will improve oral health for generations to come. The program has also benefited greatly from shipments of dental equipment and supplies transported through Missionary Flights International. These donated resources have provided students with the tools they need to receive quality training while extending compassionate care to those they serve. Together, these partnerships are doing far more than teaching dental skills. They are creating opportunity, restoring dignity, and sharing the love of Christ through practical service.

As Haiti continues to face significant challenges, the iCare Dental Assisting and Hygiene School stands as a testimony to what God can accomplish through faithful collaboration. Through education, compassionate care, and Christ-centered service, a new generation of healthcare professionals is being equipped to strengthen both the physical and spiritual well-being of their communities. Every flight carrying supplies, every lesson taught, every volunteer who serves, and every prayer offered is helping build healthier smiles, stronger communities, and a brighter future for Haiti.
